Old and rare stamps of India are extremely popular in the world of philately. Let’s explore the designs and history behind three such old Indian stamps today. ½ Anna Stamp of East India Company These historical Indian stamps were issued in 1854 when England was under the rule of Queen Victoria. During this period, the East India Company had established several trading centres and colonies in India. These definitive postage stamps of India were blue in colour and bore the face value of 1/2 Anna. 30 million stamps were printed at Calcutta using the Lithography process. It is not always easy to acquire Indian rare stamps as they are extremely expensive. However, you can always find this interesting variety more easily. They belong to the Die 1 variety and do not have any perforations. The central image shows a portrait of Queen Victoria while the watermark shows the Arms of East India Company, printed sideways. If you like collecting stamps based on personalities then you should definitely look for these. 1/2 Anna Stamp of British India These old definitive stamps of India were issued under the rule of Queen Victoria somewhere between 1866 and 1872. By this time, India was officially declared as the colony of Britain. These blue coloured Indian stamps bore a value of 1/2 Anna and were printed at the Military Orphanage Press in Calcutta using the typography process. There was a need to issue separate stamps in 1965 for official correspondence and the existing stamps were overprinted with the letters “Service”. These stamps in India had a perforation of 14 units and did not feature a watermark. 1/4 anna Stamp of Bhopal State These lovely old Indian stamps were issued for the British India-Feudatory State of Bhopal in 1872. They were black in colour and bore the face value of 1/4 anna. These definitive stamps were printed using the lithography process and did not have any perforations. An inscription “H.H. NAWAB SHAH JAHAN BEGAM” was written in English on these stamps in India in a double-lined octagonal frame. The value was printed in bottom tablets in two forms and was separated by a line. It is a very interesting postage stamp of India that features both English as well as Persian inscription. They were issued in sheets of 20 (5 rows and 4 columns). The stamp was issued under Nawab Shah Jahan Begam who reigned from 16th November 1868 to 15th June 1901. Bhopal state was established by Sardar Dost Md. Khan in 1723. It is known for its powerful female rulers and was earlier known as Malwa Agency. It is currently located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
