Hyderabad was the only princely state to issue banknotes independently in the Indian Subcontinent. These Princely State Notes featured colourful designs and were issued in various denominations. Let’s take a look at some examples today. 1 Rupee Note of Hyderabad These beautiful Princely State Notes bore the denomination 1 Rupee and were produced using Machine made paper. These rectangular notes featured the date Azar 14, 1329 and a signature of Fakhr-ud-Din Ahmad. Even though these notes were printed with prefixes A, B and C, only the ones with prefix “A” were circulated. The language panel of these wonderful osmania notes of Hyderabad show texts in Urdu. The obverse side featured the text ‘Sarkar-e-Ali' in Urdu, Hyderabad One Rupee Coin, 1335 Hijri on top left corner, Regnal Year 8 on top right corner, Promise text in three lines with the denomination "EK RUPAYA SICCA OSMANIA" in words; Six digit serial number on both sides, For the Government in Urdu, and signature in lower left. The reverse side featured a decorated Language Panel featuring denomination in words in English, Kannada, Marathi and Telugu. The watermark of this princely states paper currency featured the text ONE RUPEE written in six lines in a unique pattern. The watermark is located in different positions because the notes were printed on a continuous sheet of watermarked paper and cut randomly. As the note was black in colour they were not accepted widely. Many of them were even destroyed later on. The date on the coin featured on the note follows the Hijri calendar. 10 Rupees Notes of Hyderabad This stunning princely state rupees note was produced using machine made paper and featured the date 1 Aban 1333. The signatory of this note was Hyder Nawaz Jung while the prefix ranged from AL to AP. Like most other Princely State Currency Notes, the language panel of this note too was in Urdu. The obverse side featured the text ‘Sarkar-e-Ali' in Urdu which meant Government Currency Note. Other inscriptions include, two five-digit serial numbers, Coat of Arms on both sides, Denomination in words in Marathi, Telugu, O.S. Rs. TEN and Kannada. DUS RUPYE in Urdu twice, Promise text in three lines with the denomination "DUS RUPYE SICCA OSMANIA" in words, for the Government in Urdu, signature, Date panel, Denomination in numerals in Siyaq, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada and English. The reverse side of these Osmania notes of Hyderabad featured 10 in centre, numeral in siyaq, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi. Hope you enjoyed reading about princely state rupees of Hyderabad.
