When we talk about the greatest south Indian Kingdoms, the Pallavas can never be left out. Pallava dynasty was initially one of the feudatory states under Satavahana dynasty. They rose to power after the Satavahanas started losing their control from around 275 CE. The history of Pallava dynasty witnessed great prosperity during the reign of Mahendravarman I and Narasimhavarman I who ruled from 571 to 630 CE and 630 to 668 CE, respectively. They were responsible for the transition of rock-cut architecture to stone temples. The pallava dynasty is also credited for inventing the pallava script which laid the foundations of many other Southeast Asian scripts. Pallavas followed Hinduism and some rulers even performed the Aswamedha and other Vedic sacrifices. However, they accepted other religions as well. Origins According to some experts, the Pallava Dynasty originated in the Andhradesa or present-day Andhra region. Certain Prakrit and Sanskrit scriptures have spoken about pallavas from 3rd Century to 6th Century, whereas Tamil scripts about Pallavas date back to 7th Century. Virakurcha was supposedly the first king of the Pallava dynasty according to inscriptions found on Velurpalaiyam plates which date back to 852 AD. According to other claims by historians, the Pallavas belonged to a northern dynasty and got married to women from the Andhra region. The earliest inscriptions of the Pallavas were found in Bellary, Guntur and Nellore.
