Ancient coins of India issued by different Janapadas featured a wide variety of unique symbols. Let’s explore the designs of some of them which depict animals. Avanti Janapada Coin Featuring Elephant and Deer These rare historical coins were issued by Avanti Janapada somewhere between 500 and 400 BC. They were struck in 3.2 to 3.4 grams of silver and bore the denomination Karshapana. This old coin of India is found in irregular shapes and is produced using the punch-marked technique with four symbols. The obverse side depicts an elephant and a deer facing towards their right along with two unidentifiable symbols. The reverse side of these coins of ancient India were left blank. Andhra Janapada Coin Depicting Elephant Here’s another exciting example of historical coins of India featuring an Elephant symbol issued by Andhra Janapada between 500 and 350 BC. This 1/2 Karshapana Silver coin weighed around 1.7 to 1.8 grams and is found in roundish and square shapes. These exquisite Indian ancient coins depicted four punch marked symbols, one of which is an elephant facing towards the left. It also features two similar decorative symbols and a sprig. The reverse side was left blank like most other coins from that era. Vatsa Janapada Coins Depicting Centipede These Indian Old Coins were struck in 3.2 to 3.5 grams of silver with four punch-marked symbols for Vatsa Janapada between 500 and 410 BC. They bore the denomination Karshapana and are considered to be scarce. Apart from a Centipede, the coin shows a circle with a dot in the centre, crescents and a dot and two decorative symbols. Coin of Western Kshatrapas King Bhumaka Depicting Seated Lion These ancient coins of India were issued somewhere around 119 AD under the reign of the Western Kshatrapas King Bhumaka. These rare copper coins weighed about 4.05 grams and followed the Saka Era calendar system. These old Indian coins were produced using the Die-Struck minting technique and featured several fascinating symbols. The reverse side depicts a capital of a pillar, a seated lion with upraised paw and dharmachakra.
