History of Medieval India went for just about three hundred years under the indigenous rulers, which incorporated the Chalukyas, the Pallavas, the Pandyas, the Rashtrakutas, the muslim rulers lastly the Mughal Empire. The most significant line to rise in the ninth century was that of the Cholas. Several historians view the death of Emperor Aurangzeb as the end of medieval Indian history and the start of Modern Indian history. However, famous rulers weren’t the only thing that came out of the Medieval India; there are many rare coins in Medieval India that are of great value. Medieval period coins in India gives wonderful insights about the history of different dynasties. From coins issued in times of Delhi Sultanate to coins of Mughal India, opportunities are galore. Medieval coins not only give us wonderful insights about the history of the time but also about the different types of calendar systems that were followed in those days. History of India will remain incomplete without the mention of medieval period coins. Some of the important Medieval Indian coins are –
•The round shaped Gold Tanka from Tughluq dynasty. It belonged to the Al Sultan Al Ghazi series. The obverse featured the Persian legend Al Sultan Al Ghazi Ghiyat Al DunyaWa’l Din Abu’lMuzaffar while the reverse depicted the legend Tughluq Shah Al Sultan Nasir Amir Al Muminin. •A Gold Mohur from the Mughal Empire belonging to the Kalima type series. The Obverse featured name and title of Akbar while the Date is inscribed between two parallel lines. Mint name and Persian text Khalladallahmulkahu are also included on the obverse. The reverse depicts Kalima inside decorative quarterfoil with looped corners while the names of four caliphs are inscribed around the central design. •Belonging to the regime of Shivaji Maharaj, the gold hon coin by the Maratha Empire is extremely rare medieval coins of India were Die Struck especially for the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj. The obverse featured the Devnagri Legend Shri Raja Shiva within a row of dots while the reverse featured the devnagri text Chhatrapati within a row of dots. •The Mysore Kingdom produced the very fabulous medieval Indian coins issued under the regime of Krishna Raja Wodeyar. They were the artistic round shaped copper coins. The obverse featured a Kannada text Sri between sun and moon while an Elephant design is inscribed below.
