Lodi dynasty had its roots in present day Afghanistan. It overtook Sayyid dynasty to become the last dynasty to rule Delhi Sultanate from 1451 to 1526. Malik Sultan Shah Lodi was the governor of Sirhind under Muhammad Shah of Sayyid dynasty. Bahlul Khan Lodi was Sultan Shah‘s nephew and son-in-law, who became the next governor of the same region. Bahlul Khan had great control over the Afghan and Turkish chiefs. The last Sayyid ruler, Ala-ud-Din Aalm Shah voluntarily gave away his throne to Bahlul Khan on 19th April 1451 and Bahlul Khan became the first king of Lodi Dynasty, who went on to rule until 1489. During his reign, Bahlul Khan conquered Jaunpur. Greatest King of Lodi Dynasty Sikandar Lodi was the second son of Bahlul who reined Delhi Sultanate after Bahlul Khan’s death from 1489 to 1517. Sikandar Lodi founded Agra in 1504 and shifted the capital from Delhi to Agra. He was a poet and supported trade and commerce. He had great control over his Pashtun nobles and managed to conquer Bihar, which is considered to be the greatest events in the history of Lodi Dynasty. Last Ruler of Lodi Dynasty After Sikandar Lodi’s death, some Pashtun nobles wanted Ibrahim Lodi's older brother, Jalaluddin to become the next king. The two brothers fought at Jaunpur and the older brother was defeated. Ibrahim Lodi became the last ruler of Lodi Dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate who ruled from 1517 to 1526. The Pashtun nobles were arrested and new men were appointed for administration. Other Pashtun nobles supported the Dariya Khan, the governor of Bihar. Collapse of Lodi Dynasty Ibraham Lodi raised a powerful army but was not a good administrator or politician. He tried his best to defend his dynasty from Afghans and the Mughal Empire during his reign. He was responsible for over-utilising the state treasury for military funds. He also did not work towards reviving the dying trade routes that connected the coasts with central India. The trade routes were abandoned to stay safe from war. Ibrahim Lodi didn’t have a successor and his own uncle, Alam Khan supported the Mughal invader Babur. Daulat Khan Lodi was the Governor of Lahore at that time. He asked the ruler of Kabul, Babur to attack. The Rajput leader of Mewar, Rana Sanga had also defeated the Lodi king of Delhi Sultanate. Even Rana Sanga helped Babur to fight against Ibrahim Lodi. Ibrahim Lodi was finally defeated by Babur in 1526 at the Battle of Panipat. This led to the complete collapse of Lodi Dynasty and the emergence of Mughal Empire.
